The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011
The bar chart illustrates the rate of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales over a period of almost a century.
Overall, it can be seen easily that more and more residents of these two countries chose to buy houses rather than rent houses.
Having a closer look at the chart, the rate of rented households was almost 80% in 1918, at its peak, more than three times higher than that of owned accommodation.In 1939, the data on households in owned increased slightly by nearly 10%, was half as many as the percentage of rented accommodation, then remained unchanged. In 1971, the data on these categories were equal at 50%.
The percentage of households in owned continually experienced an upward trend and reached a peak at approximately 70% whereas that of rented accommodation suffered from a sharp decrease to only 31% in 2021. In 2011, the figure for owned house declined slightly by 5% while that for rented accommodation grew to 36%.
