A glance at the line graph reveals the Food Price Index and Average Oil Prices over a period of 11 years.
It is evident that the prices of both commodities climbed considerably between 2000 and 2011. Moreover, the trend for prices of both oil and food were immensely similar, with a strong correlation (93. 6%) is suggested.
In the year 2000, the food price was relatively close to the average price of oil, at 90 points and $25 per barrel. Over the following 4 years, both prices remained stable, before growing dramatically between 2004 and 2007. In 2007, the average food price had more than doubled to nearly $60 per barrel, and food prices had risen by around 50 points.
A remarkable increase in both goods was seen from 2007 to 2008 obviously, with the food price index reaching a peak of 230 points and average oil price rising to approximately $120 per barrel. However, by the beginning of 2009, the price of both commodities had dropped rapidly by $90 for average food price and roughly 80 points for the food price index. At long last, in 2011, the average food price index reached its peak of, at almost 240 points.
