use of TED for saving of turtles
The article presents some critisim towards the use of the turtle excluder devices (TEDs) by shrimp-fishing boats to help prevent any dangers upon turtles caught in their nets. The lecturer contradicts points made in the article, and provides responses to each critisim.
Firstly, althogh it is true that the chances of a single shrimper trapping turtles is low, there are thousands of shrimp fishing boats out in the sea, so the chances of endangering the turtles overall accumulates and becomes considerable. Also, the impact of shrimp fishing on these endangered turtle populations is more important than losing profits by shrimpers.
Secondly, a time limit on keeping nets underwater might seem like a good idea in theory, however, it is not practical. This strategy would be diffucult to enforce since there are numerous shrimp fishing boats far in the sea. While government ships patroling the sea for time limits of net lowering is not a feasible idea, in the case of TEDs, the authorities would only have to check if the TED is installed in the nets before departure at the bay.
Finally, the design of TEDs can be modified easily to be properly fit in areas where are the habitats of bigger turtles, and therefore making them efficient even for larger species.
