Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage.
The article introduces the topic of a deadly disease which has been killing about half a million of people around the world each year, called Malaria. More specifically, the writer talks about some methods to combat the disease and eradicate it completely. The lecturer in the listening, disagrees with the methods. Following are the points that are made by the writer in the passage and how the lecturer opposes the points with reasons.
Firstly, in the reading, the author talks about the first strategy to eradicate Malaria. It says that, the disease can be combatted by treating patients with powerful prescriptions medicines by determining the strain that they have been affected with. The lecturer, however, disagrees with this view point. He states that this strategy as the drugs used for killing specific strains of parasite, will not be effective. As it has been seen throughout the years that, Malarian parasites have become immune and will no longer be effected by the drugs.
Secondly, the author claims that, Malaria can be eradicated by killing all the mosquitoes using chemical sprays. Also, by killing the larvae of the mosquitoes in the water by releasing fish into the water that prey on the larvae. The lecturer believes that, this is not a good strategy to eradicate the entire population of mosquitoes because, he thinks that it is impossible to reach all the mosquitos as the adults can fly away. Furthermore, he says that the fish in the water also cannot reach all the larvae.
Lastly, the author mentions an effective strategy to wipe out all the mosquitoes. It is by making the mosquitos sterile which restricts them to reproduce. This is because the female mosquitoes mate with the sterile males, and the eggs do not hatch, which causes the mosquitoes to eventually die out. On the other hand, the lecturer says that because the males are sterile, they don't mate effectively. Due to which, the unfertilized eggs make it difficult for the mosquitoes to die out.
In conclusion, both the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting opinions about ways to eradicate mosquitoes causing Malaria.
