The pie charts below compare the proportion of energy capacity in gigawatts (GW) in 2015 with the predictions for 2040.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant
The bar charts depict a comparison regarding how much various sources constituted total energy capacity in 2015 and projected data for 2040.
The most salient feature of the two charts is that despite an expected decline in fossil fuels’ share and an opposite trend for wind and solar, fossil fuels would still remain the primary source of energy for both years.
In 2015, almost two-thirds of energy in the 6.688 total capacity was produced from fossil fuels (64%), followed by other renewables, accounting for 23%. Nuclear, wind and solar stood at third, fourth and fifth positions, with 6%, 5% and 2% respectively.
Overall capacity is anticipated to double to 11.678 GW in 2040, where fossil fuels’ share is expected to reduce by 20% to 44% whilst still remaining highest. Other renewables again will come in second with a minor decrease to 21%. Significant changes are to be seen in solar and wind energy, which will increase ninefold to 18% and twofold to 12% respectively, while the proportion of nuclear power will witness marginal downswing to 5%.
