The pie charts below compare the proportion of energy capacity in gigawatts (GW) in 2015 with the predictions for 2040.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given pie charts show expected changes in energy capacity in 2040 compared to 2015.
The most striking feature of the charts is the drop in annual gross capacity of fossil fuels, with the projected energy capacity almost doubling from 6.688 GW in 2015 to 11.678 GW by 2040. It is expected for the capacty of fossil fuels to drop significantly from 64% to 44% in 2040. By contrast, the use of solar power is estimated to rocket from 2% to 18%, whereas the use of wind energy is also expected to rise dramatically from 5% to 12% by 2040. It is projected to be a slight decrease in the use of nuclear and other renewables resources from 6% and 23% to 5% and 21% respectively in 2040.
Overall, despite the decline in the proportion of energy capacity from fossil fuels and the rise in the use of solar and wind energy, the former will remain a major energy source in 2040.
