The charts show how the internet was used in Australia by sectors and by age groups from 2010 to 2011.
Overall, the proportion of home users using the internet for emailing was highest while the younger users used the internet for social networking more than the older.
Emailing was an activity that accounted for roughly more than 90% of all home internet users during the period shown. Social networking and paying bills online or online banking activities demonstrated a different pattern with the figure around 60% in general.
In terms of categorization by age group users, the figure for emailing was over 80% for each group of users. The young people who were from 15 to 24 years old used home the internet most for social networking, taking up about 90% compared with 80% and 60% among the 25-34 and the 35-44-year-old respectively. This figure fell gradually further for the other two age groups to around 20%. Around 40% of users among 15-24-year-old used home internet for paying bills online or online banking while the figures for other age groups were higher. Almost 80% of users of the 25-34 age group used the internet for this purpose.
