The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The provided table gives the number of employees of both genders and factories in England and Wales in half a century from 1851 to 1901.
In general terms, a noticeable variation can be seen in this table is the sharp fall in number of both male and female workers, which leads to a considerable slide in that of the total. Meanwhile, the amount of factories fluctuated during the surveyed period.
Looking in closer detail at the chart, it can be observed that the quantity of male and female employees dropped more than ninefold from 287,100 to 31,000 for the former, and over sixfold from 190,000 to 30,000 for the latter. In consequence, total employees with 477,100 in 1851 ended up reaching the bottom of 61,000 people in 1901. Most of the time, it is obvious that the number of males was always higher than that of females, but in 1861, by contrast, female laborers dominated with almost 30,000 more than male. The gap between both genders’ statistics also saw a dramatic decrease : close to 100,000 dipping to 1,000. Turning to the number of factories, it witnessed an upward trend in the first three decades, reaching a peak of 721 factories in total, then reduced gradually to 600 towards the completion of the examined period.
