The line graph illustrates the changes in the proportion of city dwellers in four south-eastern nationalities over a period of 50 years, with forecasts for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, it can be clearly seen from the graph that there is an upward trend with people moving to cities in four Asian countries. Furthermore, starting from the second place, the proportion of people living in cities in Malaysia is predicted to occupy the first position.
In 1970, Philippines was the country with the highest proportion of city dwellers, at approximately 32%, followed by Malaysia with the data for city people at around 30%. With a modest figure, the proportion of city Thai and Indonesians starting at just under 20% and 13% each.
Between 1990 and 2040, the proportion of city Malaysians experienced a swift rise to 45% in 1990, which overtook that of city Filipinos, and then kept rose dramatically by 40% with predictions to 2040. Likewise, the proportion of city dwellers in Indonesia saw a significant rise to 53%, and is expected to go up to 60% in 2040. On the other hand, in Philippines and Thailand, despite a slight drop to 40% in 2010 and 28% in 2000, in turn, the figure for city dwellers in these two countries recovered to 45% and 33% in 2020, respectively, and then keep going up until 2040.
