Overall, it can be seen that there was an increase in the proportion of sales of adult fiction and children's fiction, while people spent less money on biography books, travel, and others. In addition, people showed more interest in adult fiction than other genres at the end of the period.
In 1972, adult fiction accounted for 20% of the total book sales, while children's fiction and biography shared the same figure. In 1992, the sales of adult fiction and children's fiction experienced a slight increase to 25% and 22%, respectively. Meanwhile, the figure for biography showed a modest decrease of 5% in the same time frame. Moreover, adult fiction became by far the most popular type at the expense of other genres, accounting for 45% of the total book sales. Besides, children's fiction only showed a slight rise to 25% of the total book sales, compared to biography, which was only 8% at the end of the period.
In terms of travel and others, the travel genre made up 12% of the total book sales in 1972, then witnessing a modest increase to 18% before declining by 8% in 2012. The figure for others accounted for a quarter of the chart in 1972, before dropping significantly to only 12% in 2012.
