DO COMPUTERS THINK?
The reading passage described about the Turing test created by Alan Turing. The goal of the test is to find the answer that whether the computer can think. In the process of the test experiment, a person is requested to ask questions to something in another room via speaking into a computer microphone or typing onto a computer screen. After they receive the answers on a computer screen or a computer voice, a person is required to indicate that they interact with a person or a computer. If a person unable to identify the difference or believes that the computer is a person, it means that computer can think. Nevertheless, no any computer overcomes the test since today.
The lecturer provided the contrast view derived from one philosopher that the Turing test measures the behaviors of a computer rather than its thoughts. The computers have processing systems which are designed for processing inputs and providing outputs or answers. However, in this process, the computers do not know the meaning of the processes and the results they gave. Thus, even though a computer able to respond to a person correctly in the process of Turing test, it does not mean that the computer can think. It just acts correctly.
According to the lecturer, the philosopher supported his argument by mentioning the Chinese room scenario. The scenario refers to the communication between an English-speaking person and a Chinese-speaking person. In this case, the former person cannot understand the meaning of the questions provided by the latter person. However, without understanding, the English-speaking person can guess and pick up the characters for answering the questions correctly, if he or she has large comprehensive reference about Chinese characters.
According to the lecture, the Turing test cannot test the thinking ability of computers.
