Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Some would argue that the University should only teach the subjects such as science and computers, as these subjects will be helpful in the coming years, while some say that students should be allowed to study the subjects of their own choice. Although a self selection of the curriculum will be more interesting to the students, I believe studying technical subjects like science and computers will give them the better jobs.
On the one hand, allowing students to choose their subjects could be an interesting combination of subjects. This is to say that the students often get bored when the topic of the lecture is out of their interest. If the students are provided with an option to choose the subjects that they would like to study, they will attend the lectures with more concentration. For example, as per the recent study done by the Oxford University revealed that 57% of the university dropout students left their course because they were forced to study subjects that they were not interested in. Despite this, I believe that this approach should not be preferred because students brain is not fully developed and they may choose subjects that are not in demand in the job market.
In the other hand, studying science and IT subjects are going to help the students to get the nice jobs. This is because the mentioned domains are having various developments every year and the demand for the workforce with updated qualifications also increases. As a result, all students studying such subjects will get a good job in a multinational company. For example, as per the placements statistics published by the Education Department of India, the students with science and technology background have 100% job record since last years. Therefore, I believe students should be allowed to study only such subjects at the University level.
To conclude, despite the fact that self selection of subjects could be an interesting combination for the students, it's better for students to study courses that are going to be helpful in coming years because they can achieve a good career.
