Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is better to have broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.
Since childhood, our parents have placed great emphasis on the needs of education. And gradually standards have been put in place to improve the quality of learning knowledge. When we are children, we are taught various subjects and later when we are young adults we are asked to make a selection or specialize in one.
At an early age, we start by learning 3 basic subjects, English, Mathematics and local language such as Urdu. When we advance to grade 3 and 4 then we are introduced with religious subjects along with science subject. Further in Middle School, the science subject breaks into Biology, Chemistry and Physics along with History and Geography subjects. Later in High school we are given the exposure of other advanced areas such as commerce, sociology and psychology. We are then asked to specialize in what we are more interested in and make a career out of it. This whole process of being aware of different fields of study and learning each of them helps to shape an individual and helps them in discovering their interest. Some students interests are drawn towards musical instruments and often ends up in being musicians or some develop interest in Mathematics and further gets their interest switched to Accounting, like mine. I grew up thinking to become a scientist, later I wanted to be a doctor. As I grew up more, my interest switched to mathematics and later to Accounting.
Learning all the different subjects are essential for an individual to decide on what they want to be. If I had not gotten exposure of commerce field in my high school then i would have never identified my inner hobby or my interest and I would have continued to be a doctor. Getting knowledge of different academic subjects aids in developing our brains. It is like training before the finals. However, when we are old enough to make a selection then it is better to stick to that specialization and continue to improve it in order to become an expert on the field. For example, after my 11th grade, I was able to decide that i wanted to be an accountant and in order to achieve my goal I had to start A.C.C.A. That is a specialized certification in Accounting and Finance, which is demanding by many big companies and they prefer hiring those people who specialize in ACCA rather than people who come with Masters or Bachelors Degree in my home country.
If a person does not specialize in their interest and continue learning different academic subjects then they may deviate from their main goal and waste time in sailing on many boats instead of one. For example, a person who wants to be a doctor, completes his high school and now doing Bachelors in science but also continue to do Bachelors in teaching will waste his time and energy in focusing on 2 areas instead of what he actually wants. Although, this may give him more exposure in the market as being knowledgeable on 2 different areas and make more jobs available in both fields however, this is going to be full of hassle and will waste his time to become practical.
As for the conclusion, I would like to say that it is important to learn varied academic subjects until you are aware of what you want to specialize in. Once the field of interest is identified, then continue gaining expertise in that particular field. So, I would agree to both, getting broad knowledge of academic subjects is important as well as specializing is. The right time must be identified in making a selection is what is important.
