The passage and the lecture discuss whether storing patients' medical records in electronic databases could be beneficial or not. The author of the reading passage presents three reasons to explain that electronic databases would be useful. However, the lecturer believes none of the reasons could precisely support the claim.
The author argues that by using electronic records the costs of storing and transferring of medical records will decrease. The lecturer argues against this reason and believes that changing to electronic records will not cause a significant reduction in the costs. Moreover, medicals will use paper records as the emergency back up sources. Therefore, they will still pay storage costs of the paper-based records.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that using the electronic records will reduce the medical errors which are caused by reasons such as; illegible handwriting and improper transcription of data. Nevertheless, the lecturer illustrates that electronic records could not stop these problems. In addition, doctors take note of their patients on papers. Besides, staff read these notes and enter them to the computer. Consequently, the possibility of medical errors due to illegible handwriting and improper transcription of data still exists.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that electronic record will help researchers by bringing a wide accessibility of patient records. The lecturer opposes this point by explaining that patients' records are subject to strict privacy laws in the United States. Therefore, researchers should maintain a lot of permissions in order to use this records.
