Sports as a means to relieve International Tensions
Every four years, the world stops to watch International Sporting Events such as football, cricket, Hockey and many more.
World class athletes show their best performance to make their country proud.
This has proved to be helpful by easing international tension in difficult times when powerful leaders were fighting over controlling world's economy and governments were squabbling over ownership of land.
The Olympic games are one of the best examples which prove how sporting events can bring nations together, at least temporarily. Ancient Romans and Greeks would leave war midway to take part in the Olympics.
Not only them, people from Israel and Palestine would leave their differences behind and unite to take part in the games. This can be seen as a way to end wars.
people started realizing the consequences of wars and after experiencing living in harmony, they chose the latter way.
Similarly, international sports help developing and under-developed nations to obtain spotlight.
For example, Brazil, as we know, has a high rate of unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and violent crimes, which leads to an immense embarrassment and low self-esteem due to being a Brazilian. It is a developing country and needs a lot of financial and moral support to improve in terms of economy. However, once the Football World Cup begins, the whole opinion changes as the Brazilian National Team is considered one of the best in the tournament. International Sport of any kind is an emotion. People get together, Roads are painted, families gather together, Gangs forget their rivalry and watch the matches together and support the team.
In conclusion, popular sporting events are needed in decreasing international tension and liberating patriotic emotions in a healthy way.
