TPO 31
A dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx was found in 1996, preserved in volcanic ash. There is a pattern of fine lines around the skeletal bones which are considered as feather evidence by some scientists; however, some critics refute the scientist's assumption. The article presents three reasons for critic's support. Conversely, the professor says that the mentioned reasons are not convincing, and refuses all of them.
First, the reading claims that the fine lines might have appeared after the dinosaur's death. They might be a decomposed skin by volcanic ash. The professor opposes this point by saying that there is no decomposition evidence, and the lines cannot be fibers.
Second, the text asserts that scientists have no certain explanation about the function of it, and they might be the remains of frills, an ornamental fan-shape structures growing out of their bodies. In contrast, the lecturer states that there is a kind of protein in the feather which is not presented in frills, and the research shows that the lines contain the protein which is allocated to feather.
Third, the passage posits that the feather's function is for flying or temperature regulating. Since the fine lines are on the backbone and the tail of the animal, it cannot provides its function as a feather. On the contrary, the lecturer mentions that there are other functions for feathers; for example, some birds which use their feathers due to attract the mate, so the dinosaur can have feathers on its back for this purpose.
