The reading and the lecture are both about the navigation system in humpback whales. The author claims that these whales use the stars to find their ways during migration like human sailors by providing three possible issues. On the other hand, the lecture casts doubt on the ideas one by one and he believes that the assertion of using stars by this kind of whales is fascinating, however, the pieces of evidence are not convincing.
First of all, the author contends that humpback whales are intelligent animals that it is possible for them to use stars as a navigation route. In contrast, the lecturer posits this assertion and he says that there is no dependable relation between being intelligent and using stars for navigation. In this regards, there are other animals which they have moderate intelligence but they use stars to find their way such as ducks. So, the use of stars has no connection to being intelligent and it seems to be an instinct ability.
Secondly, the author points out that these whales migrate in the straight lines that can depict the whales are under the influence of an external force. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes this claims and he suggests that although the whales move in the straight lines, the outer force which affects them is the Earth magnetic field. Furthermore, studies show that whales have an ability to sense the magnetic field and there is a part inside them by the name of the bio-magnetic field that can sense the Earth magnetic field.
Finally, the author states that the weird movements of Humpback whales by the name of spy-hopping which is rare in other species is an indicator of seeing stars by whales. However, the lecture rejects this assertion and he suggests that these movements have been seen in the sharks too which they never migrate and use this moves for hunting. Besides, the whales sometimes do the spy-hopping in the days that there are no stars.
