The table lists the number of factories and the number of male and female employees in England and Wales for a 50 years period.
Overall, the number of factories appear to increase over the period with slight fluctuation, but the number of total employees decrease, with a much greater reduction in the female employees rather than the male employees.
Over the span of 50 years, factories appear to rise, with a high upward movement from the period of 1861 with 227 factories to 622 in the period of 1871 with another further increase in 1891 with a total of 721 factories. However, there occurs a fall of about 100 factories in the period 1891 with more decrease to about 625 in the last period.
The number of women working in factories fall to a greater extent from 160,000 employees in 1861s to 60,000 employees in the 1871s, with experiencing further reduction till the last period. In contrast, the male employees also reduce but with a lower margin.
