The line paragraphs below show the production and demand for steel in million tonnes and the number of workers employed in the steel industry in the UK in 2010.
The two line graphs give information about the amount of steel manufactured and demanded in million tonnes as well as the number of employees working in the UK steel industry in 2010.
Generally speaking, demand and production of steel suffered mixed fortunes throughout the year. The amount manufactured almost always surpassed the amount demanded; however, the production index fell dramatically while the need fluctuated jaggedly. In addition, the number of workers experienced the same pattern as the production did.
Regarding demand and manufacture, production of steel began at 4000 (million tonnes) in January, with respect to the demand being exactly the half of that, then reached its peak at 5000, which was the highest number achieved in the whole period. From there, it dropped back to the starting point in March and maintained this level until around July with the amount needed also remain approximately 1000 less. Afterward, it plummeted in August and so did the demand; however, despite the promising start, it ended up lower than 1000 at the end of 2010. By contrast, although the demand witnessed a sawtooth outline during the year, it still ended up around the beginning point and therefore exceeded the supply by around 1000.
Moving onto the numbers of workers, there were 5000 people working in the steel industry at the beginning of the year. The figure then reached the peak of above 5500 then declined significantly to 3000. From that time onward, the employee number showed some fluctuations and in August, the UK steel sector employed around 3.5 million workers. However, in the rest of the year, the figure continued decreasing to the nadir of 1000 people.
