The line chart compares the amount of money spent by people in four different countries on books from 1995 to 2015.
Overall, money spending on books increased in each country over the 10-year period. Germans spent the highest amount of money on books than people in other three countries, and the figure for Austria experienced the biggest change.
In 1995, residents in German spent a total of $80 million on reading, while the equivalent figure for France and Italy was no more than $60 million respectively. Austria was ranked fourth with only $30 million. Over the following decade, despite some fluctuations, consumers in all four countries paid out an increasing amount of money on books. The figure for Austria experienced a sharp increase from 2001 to 2005, which overtook that for Italy in 2013 when people in both countries spent just under $60 million on books. By 2005, the amount of money spent by Germans had reached just under $100 million, followed by consumers in French and Austria, at approximately $75 respectively, while the equivalent figure for Italy was just over $50 million.
