The article demonstrates several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors. However, in the lecture, the professor believes there is misunderstanding in these behaviors.
When elephants grow old, their teeth are also worn out. Compared with younger elephants, the elder prefer to eat softer vegetation which is often found near water. therefore, the elder may move near bodies of water to eat the soft vegetation until they die. In this case, the idea that elephants seem aware of their dying soon and their going off alone is challenged.
In addition, elephants' ability to draw is taught by trainers. Since elephants' ears are very sensitive, trainers stroke their ears when they are teaching elephants to hold a paintbrush and paint recognizable things such as flowers or other elephants, in order to connect the act of stroking ears with painting. The lines painted by elephants are the result of the repeating procedure of training, which is contrast to the belief that elephants have artistic ability.
Finally, actually elephants are not afraid of mice because of mice themselves. It's only because in the wild they're not familiar with these little mammals and they keep away from mice out of a natural instinct. Once they have got to know mice better, elephants don't mind them at all. For example, the elephants in the zoo are not afraid of mice, because they realize mice have no threat to them. therefore, elephants don't really have a fear of mice.
