It is believed that people who read for pleasure can develop better imagination and language skills than people who prefer to watch TV.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this argument?
It is an undeniable fact that reading is thought-provoking and can expand one's imagination. Some people consider that reading has great potential to develop one's imagination and language ability in a more subliminal and in-depth way than watching a TV. I advocate this narrative.
To begin with, one of the most obvious advantages of reading booking is that we create mental pictures of what the author narrates and depict. Through the use of words, the author is creating pictures and images of scenes within a book in our mind. As a consequence of this, our ability to imagine and build different ideas dramatically improves. Moreover, our reading mind may also go along hundreds of reports and stories in the daily newspaper, which help lift our horizon, develop our cultural enlightenment and enrich our language abilities.
The ability to use language is actually a cumulative build-up from reading. An author should have a large pool of language skills before an article could be written. By the same token, we read to interpret, understand or even enjoy either for pleasure or knowledge. In the course of reading, we wittingly or unwittingly influenced and will turn to use what we have read.
In comparison, TV mainly focuses on visual impacts and offers audiences instant gratification. There is no doubt, watching movies, documentaries also play an important role in building up one's imagination, listening and language abilities. For example, documentaries can improve one's knowledge in a certain area but this might be for a shorter time period due to a lot of distractions such as advertisements, etc.
In conclusion, from the contrast between reading and watching TV, I think that reading can a person perfect. The end resulting from is reading is long-term whereas that from TV may be temporary and not as significant in potential as reading.
