The graph below shows the consumption of spreads from 1981 to 2007.
The line graph indicates the amount of three kinds of spreads (margarine, butter and low fat and reduced spreads) which were consumed over a period of 26 years. Units are measured in grams.
Overall, it is evident that the consumption of margarine and butter generally declined over the period given, while that of low fat & reduced spreads rose. In the first year, butter was the most popular spread, which was replaced by margarine from 1991 to 2001. And, following that low fat and reduced spreads was the most widely used spread in the final years.
At the beginning of the period, there was a steady increase in the proportion of butter from just over 140 grams and peaked at under 160 grams in 1986. After which the consumption of butter plunged to a low of about 50 grams. Likewise, that of margarine fluctuated at somewhere between 80 and 100 grams prior to 1991. In 1991, it remained relatively stable of 100 before dropping dramatically to 40 grams.
On the other hand, the expenditure of low fat and reduced only started at approximately 10 grams in 1996 and then reached a high of marginally above 80 grams in 2001. And then, the expenditure of low fat and reduced slightly spreads had a downward trend from just over 80 in 2001 to 40 grams in 2007.
