The reading passage states three reasons to support that the subject of the painted portrait of a teenage girl presented by the Austen family is Jane Austen herself. The lecturer argues that these evidences are not convincing at all.
Firstly, when Austen’s family, her descendant, authorized the portrait as an illustration of Austen’s letters, it was almost 70 years after Austen’s death. So Austen’s descendants would never see her in the real life. They cannot make sure for the subject is Austen herself.
Secondly, Austen’s family is a big family, the relatives of Austen share the same genes. There are so many female teenagers in her family, and are very resemble with her. We could believe that the face in the portrait is one of those relatives.
Last, even the painting is not signature and marked the date. But we know the man who began to sell the canvas for the painting in English when Austen were 27 years old. It means the painting is older than Austen.
With these three details provided, the lecturer totally dispute the statement in the reading passage and make the conclusion that the portrait cannot be Austen herself.
