The reading and lecture both discuss the need of having strong regulations to handle the coal ash. While the reading provides three explanation to support the idea that we do not need a new strong regulations, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading states that we already have strong regulations and many companies use liner to prvent any leaking. On the other hand, the professor questions this notion by saying that the rules that we already have are not sufficient. Moreover, liner has to be in each land full. This is because several old liners cost damage. For instance, the chemicals leaked to the ground and the drinking water contaminated. So, we need new strong regulation like the old one.
Secondly, the reading avers that the strong regulations might let the companies stop using the coal ash materials to produce other products. Also, many customers will stop buying these products. On the other hand, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that the companies will not stop using the recycle materials. For example, the mercury materials are very hazard and many companies saved it for fifty years with no concern. So, people will not stop buying these materials.
lastly, the reading states that using the strong regulations might increase the cost of handling coal ash materials. As a result, the electricity bill will increased for the whole community. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this point by explaining that the strong regulations will increase the cost of handling the coal ash by one billion. On the other hand, the cost of the electricity bill will increase by just one dollar per month. So, we can so the math and protect the environment.
