In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
The article states that reducing the job hour from 5 days of work to 4 days of work will be beneficial to the company and the individual, and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that they are not as beneficial as the article suggests and refutes each of the author’s responses.
First, the reading claims that reducing the work load per week will increase the profit of the company and reduces the errors performed by the employees. The professor refutes this point by saying that this will in turn decline the profit of the company. He states that introducing the new employee will lead to increase the cost for training and medical cost offered to these employees. Further, addition of new employees will require more office space and more computers that will hinder the profit of the company. For these reasons, the lecturer thinks that addition of new employees will result in declining of profit rather than increasing.
Second, the article posits that reduction in work hour will help to decrease the unemployment rate. However, the professor argues that this might not be the case. According to the professor, the company might ask the employee to work overtime and compensate for the loss of work hour. The company might raise the expectation that the employee can complete their five-day work in four days. Thus, there might not be new job openings and even degrade the current job condition.
Third, the reading says that the it will increase the quality of life of an individual. The individuals can spend more time with their families and have strong emotional attachment with their family members. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this in turn reduces the quality of life of an individual. The lecturer states that it reduces the job stability, and have higher chances of losing their job during economic recessions. In addition, the lecturer also says that the people working 4 days in a week have lower chances for promotion than the people working 5 days in a week.
