Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible.
First, atmospheric pressure at Venus’ surface is at least 90 times greater than the pressure at Earth’s surface This means that a force of 100 kilograms is pressing down on every square centimeter of surface All spacecraft that have landed on Venus have been crushed by this extreme pressure within an hour of landing. Almost anything humans might land on Venus would be crushed as well.
Second, as far as we know, there are no reservoirs of water on Venus' surface, and the planet's atmosphere, made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid, contains hardly any oxygen or water vapor Water and oxygen would therefore probably have to be supplied to Venus from Earth. The idea of ensuring a regular supply of water and oxygen from Earth is impractical in the extreme and would probably defeat the purpose of establishing a permanent station on Venus.
Third, very little sunlight reaches the planet's surface. About 60 percent of the sunlight that hits Venus is reflected back into space by the thick clouds that fill the atmosphere, which means that only 40 percent of the sunlight can get through the clouds Below these clouds is a dense layer of carbon dioxide, which blocks even more light, so very little light reaches the surface. The lack of light would prevent the use of solar power cells, so humans could not get electricity to power their machines and equipment.
Presence of human on Venus plant seem to be a bit challenging for scientists. While the instructor believe of the possibility to make this happened. The article, however, argues the problems that are associated with this aspect.
First issue concerns with the atmospheric pressure. The professor suggests that space craft can be float by balloon 50 kg above Venus surface. This pressure is the same as the pressure on Earth, and this will prevent the crushing of the spaceship. However, the reading passage assumes that Venus pressure is 90 times higher than on earth. Furthermore, the pressure that the spaceship put on Venus is about 100 kg/square meters, that will lead to crush once the spaceship lands.
Second problem is associated with the availability of water and oxygen. The instructor mentions that Venus plant have both sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. Both of these chemicals can be used by the spaceship to produce water and thus oxygen. In contrast the article states that there is no reservoir for water and oxygen, thus, no permanent presence of human can occur on this plant.
The last subject of concern is about the presence of sunlight. The speaker says that the spaceship can use a solar power to collect sun light that reach to the plant, as well as, it make use of the reflected light from the clouds that prevent some part of the light reaching plant surface. while the reading cast doubt this by stating that 60% of the sunlight will be reflected from the clouds, and the other 40% will be absorbed by the chemicals found in the space. So, only small amount of sunlight will reach the plant, and thus no light lead to no electricity used by spaceship.
