The reading states that the invasion of zebra shellfish can not be stopped and it poses a serious treat to freshwater fish in all of North America. However, the professor refutes that by following reasons
First, according to the reading, the history has already proved that since the mussel can live in the ship, it can show up in a large domain. While the professor contends that as long as ships empty ballast water halfway of the journey, the mussel would be killed by salt water
On top of that, the reading suggests that because the mussel have no predators generally, and it can easily survive under different situation, they can dominate every new habitat. But the professor suggests that the local birds would change their habit to eat the mussel no matter what they feed on before.
Lastly, quite different from the reading, the professor points out that though the mussel would compete food with some freshwater fish, it does have positive impact on some fish species. The mussel can generate some nutrient for the fish feed on bottom of the lake to cause the fish population to increase.
