Communal online encyclopedia
The passage and the lecture are both about Communal Online encyclopedias. While the passage describes the problems of communal encyclopedias over the traditional ones , the lecture talks about the advantages of communal encyclopedias. The main points the passage and the lecture talk about are Errors, hacking and required information.
Firstly, the passage indicates how any random person without any expertise can change or edit the information in Communal online encyclopedias. This may result in lot of inaccurate information, as opposed to the traditional encyclopedias which is written only by trained experts. The lecture contradicts this by saying that the traditional encyclopedias have never been close to perfect and there were lots of mistakes there too. He also adds that it is easier to correct any information online when compared to the traditional encyclopedia.
The second point the passage emphasizes is on the hacking. Since any user has access to the online encyclopedia, there is a large chance of users corrupting the data. The lecture defends this statement by saying that they have found two resolutions to this problem. They have made the online encyclopedia as a read only format file, so that the crucial facts will be reliable. Also they have special editors in the team whose main work is to keep track of the changes the editor makes and eliminate any malicious information.
Finally, the author posits that the communal encyclopedia give too much information in depth. As a result of this, it is difficult to find out the important and unimportant information. The lecture opposes by saying that, the traditional encyclopedia is crisp as it has limited space and the online encyclopedia provides wide variety and diversity of information according to a user's interest.
