The reading and the lecture are both about the theory of bees have existed since 200 million years ago that is implied by some fossil records which have been discovered in the southwestern of the United States. Whereas the author of the reading states that those structures were not formed by bees the lecturer suggests that the arguments used in the reading are not convincing. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the passage by providing three reasons.
First and foremost, according to the reading, none of these fossil records is related to 200 million years ago. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He explains why and wherefore bees could not be preserved as fossils at that time. bees have fossilized typically in a sticky liquid produced by trees. Besides, these type of trees were rare at that time, so bees could not be preserved.
secondly, the reading states that flowering plants appeared on Earth 125 million years ago that has provided bees' food. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this reasoning. He argues that it is actually possible that bees existed before flowering plants emerged on Earth. In addition, he points out that they might have been feeding on non-flowering plants which existed at that time. Later when flowering plants evolved, bees may have adapted to feeding on them.
Finally, the passage climes that, indeed, these fossil records are probably similar to nest chambers made by modern bees but not completely. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that even though those nest chambers are not the same exactly but some chemical evidence which bees have used to make their nests waterproof are seen.
In conclusion, although the reading and lecture are both about bees existence, three main points made in the reading passage are effectively challenged by the professor.
