The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The line graph shows the amount of energy consumption in the United States from 1980 to 2015, as well as projected consumption to 2030.
Throughout all these years, the most popular fuel among Americans was and will continue to be petrol and oil, which started at 35 quadrillion units in 1980, steadily increased to about 40 quadrillion units in 2015 despite some fluctuations, and is predicted to continue increasing to 50 quadrillion units in 2030. The amount of coal consumed show a nearly reversed trend as that of natural gas. Started at about 16 quadrillion units in 1980, which was lower than the natural gas consumed (20 quadrillion units) in the same year, the figure for coal showed an overall rising trend and reached about 25 quadrillion units in 2015, which was the same as the number of natural gas and is projected to overtake natural gas and rise to about 30 quadrillion units in 2030, while natural gas would level off at 25 quadrillion units thereafter.
A similar pattern was seen in the remaining three types of energy sources, being nuclear power, solar or wind power, and hydropower. In 1980, all these three energy sources were standing at less than 5 quadrillion units, but nuclear power and solar/wind power saw a steady upward trend and may increase to 8 quadrillion units and 6 quadrillion units respectively by 2030. The use of hydropower experienced some fluctuations from 1980 to 2010, then remained unchanged at its starting level and is projected to stay at this level until 2030.
Overall, petrol and oil produced the largest amount of energy in the USA and it will receive increasing importance, whereas the remaining five types of fuel were less popular and will remain insignificant.
