Both the reading passage and lecture discuss about existence of bees 200 million years ago. In spite of discovery of bee nests like fossil structures, the author remains skeptical and presents some arguments refuting existence of bees that long ago. However, the professor challenges these points by providing several counter arguments.
To begin with, the author brings up the fact that earliest fossil of bees is 100 million years old which does not support the existence of bees 200 millions years ago. By contrast, the lecturer asserts that it is possible that bees might existed but not preserved due to absence of right kind of tree razins at that time.
Secondly, the author posits that bees and flowering plants have a mutually dependent biological relationship. As flowering plants appeared only 125 million years ago, it is highly unlikely that bees existed before that time. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that bees at that time might have different source of food like non-flowering plants and thus they might existed, as they were not necessarily dependent on flowering plants.
Finally, the author depicts that fossilized structures of 200 million years ago lack some details which invalidates the assumption that it was created by bees. The professor agrees that discovered nests does not have spiral pattern caps like modern bee nests. But she also brings up the chemical evidence which states that special chemical components have been found in the fossilized structures similar to modern bee nests which protect bee nests against water. According to the lecturer, this supports the hypotheses that fossilized structures were created by bees which existed 200 years ago.
