The professor revises the idea presented in the passage that proposes three possible advantages of establishing human colonies on asteroids rather than Moon or Mars and refutes each of the points made in the passage.
First of all, the reading passage states that the low gravity of asteroids have several benefits including the easier landing and taking off of a spaceship and the higher capacity it could have. On the other hand, the professor argues against this idea by pointing out that there are certain risks accompanying the lower gravity. For instance, it can result in lower muscle mass and bone density. According to the professor, low gravity causes health problems even to the astronauts in short periods, yet alone lifetime travel to the asteroids. Therefore, the first view is not a practical idea.
Secondly, the professor's opinion contradicts the second notion mentioned in the text that mining and trading of valuable metals entailing gold and platinum, which are rare on Earth, could be advantageous for businesses. He believes that the costs of mining and transporting these metals in large quantities could be extremely high. Besides, the rarity of these metals is the key factor for their value. If they are abundant, they will lose their current market price. Hence, the second reason does not seem to be a profitable idea for the purpose of the text.
Finally, the author proposes that asteroids are easy to reach since they move and sometimes get exceptionally close to Earth. On the contrary, the professor holds a different view. He clarifies that although it is easy to reach the asteroids, it is not easy to return from them since they have unusual orbits. As a result, they may approach Earth's orbit in one point, but they can travel much farther even than the location of Mars. Thus, the third reason has serious deficiencies regarding the main point of the passage.
