TPO 37- One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.
The lecturer challenges the topic proposed in the reading that TEDs have been criticized for several reasons. And she thinks that TEDs are supported by many scholars to solve the problem of turtles.
First, the article suggests that one shrimp boat accidentally catches about one turtle every month. However, the professor points out that there are thousands of shrimp boats and thousands of turtles are caught which includes endangered sea turtles. We should focus on how sea turtles as a whole are affected by the shrimp industry as a whole, rather than concentrating on individuals' impact.
Second, the essay supposes that there are alternative methods of protecting sea turtles that may be more effective than TEDs. But the lecturer considers that the time limit is impossible to enforce. The government cannot oversee the time limit of any single shrimp boat, so using TEDs is easier to supervise which could be executed by checking the net before shrimp boats leave the pool and whether they use TEDs.
Third, the passage indicates that TEDs are not effective for larger species of endangered sea turtles. Nevertheless, the professor argues that although large species cannot escape from the net, the TEDs could be modified according to their functions subsequently, which could allow turtles to escape. Then, this is no longer a problem.
