Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible
First, atmospheric pressure at Venus’ surface is at least 90 times greater than the pressure at Earth’s surface This means that a force of 100 kilograms is pressing down on every square centimeter of surface All spacecraft that have landed on Venus have been crushed by this extreme pressure within an hour of landing. Almost anything humans might land on Venus would be crushed as well.
Second, as far as we know, there are no reservoirs of water on Venus’ surface, and the planet s atmosphere, made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid, contains hardly any oxygen or water vapor Water and oxygen would therefore probably have to be supplied to Venus from Earth. The idea of ensuring a regular supply of water and oxygen from Earth is impractical in the extreme and would probably defeat the purpose of establishing a permanent station on Venus.
Third, very little sunlight reaches the planet s surface. About 60 percent of the sunlight that hits Venus is reflected back into space by the thick clouds that fill the atmosphere, which means that only 40 percent of the sunlight can get through the clouds Below these clouds is a dense layer of carbon dioxide, which blocks even more light, so very little light reaches the surface. The lack of light would prevent the use of solar power cells, so humans could not get electricity to power their machines and equipment.
Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses the possibility of having a human station on Venus. The reading asserts that because of the harsh environment of the planet it is impossible to have a station there. The lecturer propose a floating station fifty kilometer above the surface to repudiate this claim.
Initially, it is alleged in the reading that on Venus' surface the pressure is so much more than earth that no station can tolerate it and as a result will be crashed within an hour. However, the lecturer alludes to the fact that as we go up the pressure drops. Fifty kilometer above the surface the pressure equals to the earth and consequently it would have no harm to the station.
Second, the writer proclaims that Venus' atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid but there is not any water or oxygen and these elements should be supplied from earth which is not easy. Yet again, the speaker underscores that chemical processes can provide the basic water and oxygen for humans to survive there by materials which are obtained from atmosphere. So its not needed to import them from earth.
The final point of contention between the listening and the reading passages is a thick layer of clouds which blocks the sunlight. The author explains that since the light can not reach the surface, solar power panels will have no use as they can not produce energy. On the other hand, the listening mentions that fifty kilometer above the surface of the planet, albeit there exist cloud but they are not dense enough to blocks the light completely and implementation of solar panels are possible. He claims that not only the panels can use the light from above but also can generates electricity by the use of reflection from clouds too which proved more than the need of the station.
