It is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends.
Some people say that making new contacts would be beneficial. Having friends in all streams could help whenever one gets trapped in predicament. However, I strongly disagree with these people and argue that old friends are more important to maintain than making new friends. I will support my viewpoint with following three reasons.
Firstly, we have known old friends from a very long time, they have been watching us grow and so does the famous saying goes, “Old is Gold”. There are only few people with whom our interest aligns, such rare ones tend to be with us through our school days and teenage. They have seen us face hurdles, they are very familiar with our likes and dislikes. To people with whom we recently got in touch, it would take a quite long time for them to understand our likes and dislikes. In fact, our interests keep changing periodically and our old friends tend to keep a whole record of it. For instance, I have my school best friend, her name is Neha. During my first birthday in college, I received many gifts from my new friends but her present really enthralled me because she gave me the thing which I was really in need of. Even my family members could not recognise that I needed a wrist watch.
Secondly, maintaining old friends is really essential because we have had made many memories in the past. With new friends, we might make gossips, talk about current scenario in office or college, but with old friends- one would be taken aback to the beautiful time like school days where we led a tension free joyous life. What could be more rejuvenating than discussing sweet old memories. For instance, I had exam in around ten days, I was really tensed and worried as there was lot of syllabus to complete. I called up one of my old friends, we talked and I got to know regarding my other old friends, their situations, what career they were pursuing and so on. We laughed, giggled and enjoyed. After the talk, I felt relaxed and continued my preparation with calm mind.
Finally, one cannot find out whether the new friend is trustworthy or not. It happens many times that the real character of the person comes out after some period of time. It had happened with my roommate, she considered her new friend very loyal and used to tell her all secrets. One day, it turned out that the girl used to spread calumny about my roommate and that damaged her name in college.
To conclude, the issue of whether it is more important to keep old friends than to make new friends is very complex. Some suggest that one should interact with every people, make them friend, so that whenever you need help many people will come forward for help. Nevertheless, I still contend that keeping in touch with old friends is more important than making new friends as we are always assured that no matter what our old friends are very loyal and would definitely come forward to help us.
