In this set of material both the lecturer and the reading passage discuss the "quackers" phenomenon which is an underwater noises which was detected by Russian submarines in the past. While the reading passage provides some theories to enlighten this effect, the lecturer utterly refutes all these possibilities.
Firstly, the professor articulates it is unlikely that the source of these sounds are related to the Orca whales. Because these whales are mostly living near the surface of the occean. However, the submarines are going to the deepest part of the occean. So, it is unlikely that the submarines sensors detect the sound of the whales. On the other hand, the text contends that one theory propses that the sounds which the submarine detected may be related to these whales' ritual. Because some researches have revealed that the sound which are made by these whales are similar to those that the submarines were detecting.
Moreover, the professor avers that some evidences are against the theory that these sound may be generated by giant squids. Because these sounds firstly recorded in 1960 and were continued for two decades but suddenly after 1980 the sounds were disappeared. So, it is impossible that these sounds has been produced by the whales. Conversely, the reading passage alleges the giant squids are difficult to detect by sonar and it is possible that they may emit the sound.
Finally, the lecturer declares that it is impossible that another submarine has emitted these sounds and disappeared quickly. Because nowadays, which the technology has improved so much, the submarine with these speed ability have not been invented. On the contrary, the essay asserts that it is a probabillity that the sounds have been created by foreign submarines unintentionally and they have had a kind of technology that the Russian submarines could not detect them.
