The reading and lecture are about whether Robert reached the North Pole withing thirty seven days or not. The reading provides three explanations that prove he reached the north pole. The lecturer is the opinion of these explanations cannot be solid evidence about the case.
To begin with, the author states that analyze on Robert's records and tools demonstrated that he reached the north pole. This specific argument is refuted by the lecturer. She mentions that the examination may be subjective because member of investigation team were the explorer's companions. Moreover, the inspecting process lasted for only two days and did not dissect the equipment cautiously, which means that examination can not be objective.
Secondly, in the reading, it is remarked that Tom Avery, explorer, reached the north pole in a time less than thirty seven days by using same sledge which Robert used although average speed is even faster than modern snowmobiles. Nonetheless, the lecturer posits that they traveled in different ways including storing food and traveling situation. She claims that Tom was storing more food and traveling under more pleasant condition, which proves that their travel should not be compared whereas they used same vehicles.
Finally, the author of the reading posits that angle of shadow in a photograph that Robert took was measured, then it was proved that he reached the north pole because there was no discrepancy between the sun's position of the picture and the north pole. The lecturer, nevertheless refutes this by providing further explanation that assessment is unreliable because quality of image was not enough. She mentions that photograph was taken with outdated camera and was blurred, so the measurement on the picture is undependable.
