The table below compares actual and predicted figures for populations in three different cites.
The table compares three different areas, namely Sao Paulo, Jakarta and Shanghai, in terms of the real population in 1990 and 2000 and projection inhabitants in 2000.
Looking at the report, it is immediately obvious that while the residents living in Shanghai decreased, the opposite was true for the other cities. Additionally, the actual citizen growth rate was much lower than expected in 2000.
In 1990, Sao Paulo municipality had the most people settling, at 15 million, followed by Shanghai and Jakarta, with 13.5 million and 9.5 million respectively. Although Sao Paulo's population was predicted to reach 24 million by 2000, it only rose to 18 million. Similarly, the number of residents in Jakarta just increased by 2 million to 11.5 million in 2000 compared to the estimate of 14 million.
Regarding the Shanghai city, there were 13.5 million people living in Shanghai in 1990 and the population was expected to experience a significant rise over the decade ensuing. However, in fact, it dropped to 12.5 million, instead of the forecast elevate to 17 million.
