The lecturer has explained few points to refute the claims mentioned in the passage.
First of all, the author of the passage claimed that the Chevalier was not wealthy because he had borrow some money from Swiss merchant. However, the professor explained that it is true that the Chevalier has taken loan from Swiss merchants but that doesn't mean that he was poor. The Chevalier has to sell land and convert the amount into money and during that time he required money and that is the reason why he had borrowed money.
Secondly, the paragraph mentioned that the conversations recorded in the memoir is inaccurate because it was written many years ago. Though, the professor provided important details about these conversations which refute this assumption. For instance, there were many witnesses who confirmed that the Chevalier used to write down everything by keeping notes.
Thirdly, the author of the passage pointed out that the Chevalier had many political connections which helped him to free from jail by giving bribes to jailer. Notwithstanding, the professor provided more convincing argument to refute this point is that there were many other prisoners who had more powerful contacts than the Chevalier. She further explained that it could be actually true that the Chevalier was able to escape from roof by using a piece of metal because just after his escape the government had to repair the ceiling of the jail rooms.
All in all, the lecture and the passage had contradiction on same topic and therefore the passage is not conclusive.
