The two tables inllustrate sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas which were consumed in five European countries between 1999 and 2004.
Overall, people living in the European were likely to purchase bananas more than coffee during that five years, especially in Switzerland.
The first table shows information about sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee in 1999 and 2004. In the UK, the number of people who consumed coffee increased dramatically, which led to a steep growth in sales of coffee from 1.5-20 millions, while the sales of coffee in Denmark and Sweden witnessed a slight increase from 1.8-2 millions and from 0.8-1 millions respectively. In Switzerland, the figure for sales of coffee in 2004 was 2 times as high as that in 1990, at 6 millions and 3 millions respectively. The sales of coffee in Belgium grew moderately from 1-1.7 millions.
Besides, the second table gives the figure for sales of Fairtrade-labelled bananas. The sales in Switzerland underwent a sharp rise of 32 millions. While the figure for sales of bananas in UK and Belgium increased considerably from 1-5.5 millions and from 0.6-4 millions respectively, the sales in Denmark and Sweden experienced a moderate growth from 2-0.9 millions and from 1.8-1 millions respectively.
Comparing the two tables, it can be seen that in 1999, the figure for sales of coffee fluctuated between 0.8 and 1.8 millions in five European countries when the sales of bananas fluctuated between 0.6 and 2 millions, except Switzerland, at 15 millions.
