Energy is used by average household and greenhouse gas emissions is produced by them
The first pie chart compares the proportion of energy is used by Australian households for six sectors whereas, the second pie chart gives some data about the corresponding percentage of greenhouse gas emissions by them.
Overall, it is clear that water heating is not the sector that consumed the largest proportion of energy usage, however, it is the key driver of greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, this is the same trend in the percentage of energy usages and greenhouse gas emissions in the cooling and lighting sectors.
Look at the first chart, we can see in a typical household in Australia, 42% of total energy is used for heating, compared with 30% of energy for water heating. The remainder energy also is used for some other appliances, in which, refrigeration and other appliances account for 7% and 15% of the total energy usages respectively while just only 6% of the energy is used for both cooling and lighting.
The highest proportion of greenhouse gas emissions is water heating, about 32% of the total. Although heating consumed the greatest percentage of energy, just only 15% of the total greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the heating sector. By contrast, the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions is 28% and 14% in other appliances and refrigeration that is approximately double when comparing with their energy usage. In addition, this figure for cooling and lighting is just 3% and 8% of the total.
