The table gives the information about the total number of Initial Teacher Training graduating in the United Kingdom in two academic years, 2005/6 and 2006/7, with particular attention being paid to the number of male qualifiers.
In both years, the overall numbers of students remained identical, however, there was a great difference between the number of males and females who qualified.
In 2005/6, out of a total of 31930 students, only 25,8% were males, thereafter, the percentage of males who qualified in 2006/7 was even lower. Particularly, out of a total of 31945 students, only 23,8% of them were male. This is a drop of 1,5%.
The standards for which the students acknowledged were also at variance. The majority of students were certified PGCE, as applied to male students. While the overall quantity of students who were nominated for PGCE fell slightly from 24405 to 23900 a year later, the figure of apprentices was nearly three times as many who registered for BEd and other degrees. There was also a decrease in the number of males who gained this qualification, at about 1,5%.
In general, regarding the number of males who met the requirements for Initial Teacher Training, it is significantly outnumbered by females, and that the proportion of male qualifiers is gradually declining.
