Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: they may be navigating by the stars, much as early human sailors did. What we know about humpback whales makes this a distinct possibility.
Both of the reading passage and lecture discuses humpbacks, a kind of whales that migrate long-distance for feeding and mating purpose. The article states that point the humpbacks, probably be navigating by the stars for finding their ways and mentions three reasons for this idea. However, the professor disagrees with this idea because of his reasons.
First, the passage claims that the whales are really intelligent animals they have complex brains, so they can use this method. In contrast, the professor states that it does not relationship between the whales' brain and this ability. Other animals such as ducks also have this ability. Ducks are not intelligent animals but they use start to navigate by so these two are not related to each other this is behavior they were just born with.
Second, the article mentions that the humpbacks whale moves in straight lines but because they swim in the open ocean, they cannot rely on land features so they might rely on stars. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that the whales use the earth's magnetic field, they have a kind of substance called biomagnetic. These materials in their body make them sensitive to the earths' magnetic field so it helps them navigate in straight lines.
Finally, the reading passage states that the humpback whales have abnormal behavior known as spy-hopping. The whales looking at the stars they are providing them with information to navigate. The professor disagrees with this idea and claims that this behavior is really rare and some animals just use it such as some sharks, but they don't migrate or look at stars. When the sharks want to hunt their prey they use this behavior on the day when no stars can be seen.
