The passage and the lecture are both about the possibility of edmontosaur migration during the wintertime. The author presents three arguments to mentions that these giant dinosaurs moved to southern lands to could survive in harsh climates. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes all of the evidence stated by the text and says that these reasons are not convincing.
In the passage, the writer begins by stating that since the main sources of edmontosaurs' food were vegetation and in the winter there was not enough food in North Slope, these animals had to travel to a better area. The professor, however, asserts that in those days the weather was warmer especially in summer. This good temperature provides a situation for growing plants during summertime. The animals could feed the nutritious dead vegetation in the winter, therefore it could not be a logical idea.
The author also claims that since many bones have been found in the southern region, it can be concluded that these dinosaurs lived in herds which can support their migration. Conversely, the speaker argues this viewpoint, mentioning that living in herds may have some other reason like extra protection against predators. He further explains that nowadays there is a kind of animal in some parts of the United States that live in herds but they are not migrated.
Finally, the writer points out that the dinosaurs had good physical conditions which made them able to travel far distances at a high speed. In contrast, the professor states that even the adult Edmontosauruses were able to move such long distances so fast, their younger kids could not do that as well. Moreover, as the kids could not survive lonely, all the herd should be with them and it is another reason to refute the migration hypothesis.
