The bar chart illustrates changes in male and female employment rate across 5 European countries and the USA in 1995 and 2005.
Overall, the rate increased stably regardless of gender. However, the male employment rate was always higher than the female rate in both Australia, Switzerland, Iceland, the UK, New Zealand, and the USA.
In 1995, the proportion of men who got occupations was over 55%, 65% and 70% in Australia, Switzerland, and Iceland respectively. In the next decade, the figure rose to nearly 70%, 78% and 82% accordingly. In terms of female employment rate, Australia, Switzerland, and Iceland in turn witnessed a steady increase from 27% to under 40%, from 56% to 69%, and from over 40% to 51%. Therefore, it is clear that although the female figure surged significantly, the male employment rate was higher throughout the whole period.
In the UK, New Zealand, and the USA, in 1995, about 50%, 23%, and 45% females have jobs. Ten years later, the rate surged to about 62%, 41%, and over 60% respectively. The male's figure started with 55%, 60% and under 60% in 1995 and jumped to 71%, over 70% and 70% respectively in 2005.
