The reading and the lecture are both about the practical ways of reducing water salinity in the Salton sea, to preserve animal lives there. Whereas the author suggests three ways to reduce the salinity of the lake, the lecturer states that these ideas are unrealistic and not practical. She refutes each of the reasons.
First, according to the reading by using desalination facilities near the lake, they can heat the water and then condense the vapor to make freshwater then, return it to the lake. However, the lecturer disputes this idea. She mentions that these facilities can reduce the salinity level, but as mentioned in the passage there will remain some solid waste materials that can be harmful to human health. The desalination process produces some chemicals except salt which are toxic. For example, Selenium can be spread through the air and make serious health problems for locals by breathing.
Second, the author claims that they can transfer water by pipelines or canals from the Pacific ocean, which is 20% less salty, to the lake and dilute it. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this statement. She believes that constructing such a long pipeline or canal about one hundred kilometers will cost a lot of money. So, this project is very expensive to be practical.
Finally, the reading suggests that by dividing the lake into smaller sections by walls, then delivering all receiving freshwater from rainfall or rivers to the main section, they can save it. On the contrary, the lecturer rejects this point by saying that these walls can't stand long term since this area experiences very intensive geographical phenomena like earthquakes. As a result, the constructed walls with the first earthquake will be destroyed and the water banks will mix again. She believes that this is just a short-term solution.
