The charts illustrate the average proportions of three types of nutrients consumed in typical meals in the USA, all of which may be harmless to the health if eaten too much.
Overall, it is clear that the majority of sodium and saturated fat is consumed in dinner, while most added sugar is eaten in snacks. Lunch also tends to be salty and has a lot of fat, while breakfast has the lowest percentages of the three types of nutrients.
As can be seen, dinner and lunch are roughly similar. The proportions of sodium consumed for dinner and lunch are 43% and 29%, respectively; likewise, the rates for saturated fat eaten in dinner and lunch takes up 37% and 26%, respectively. However, the amount of sugar in an average meal for dinner and lunch is much lower, at 23% and 19% respectively.
Turning to breakfast and snacks, the amount of sodium has the same percentage, at 14%, while the percentages of fat eaten in both meals are a little higher, at 16% and 21%, respectively. In terms of sugar, there is the greatest disparity with 42% of snacks being sugary and just 16% of breakfast being made up of sugar.
