It is clear that overall sodium and saturated fats are mainly consumed in dinner, while the American people eat added sugar foods in snacks. Among the meals in the US diet, breakfast appears to be the healthiest option, with lower consumption of three nutrients compared to other meals.
The average percentages of sodium, saturated fats, and added sugars in the breakfast of American people were 14%, 16%, and 16% respectively. During lunch, these proportions were slightly higher, at 29% for sodium, 26% for saturated fats, and 19% for added sugars.
Sodium and saturated fats are consumed significantly in dinner at 43% and 37% respectively, while the proportion of added sugar was 23%. By contrast, the figure for added sugar was highest in snacks, at 42%, more than double when compared to fats, and three times for sodium.
In conclusion, there were significant differences between some typical meals in the USA in terms of the average percentages of three nutrients.
