The two charts below illustrate the proportion of domestic possession of electrical equipment and how much time is allocated for household chores in one country over a century, starting in 1920.
It is clear that there is an upward trend for all types of families’ electrical appliances throughout the period from 1920 to 2019. Consequently, less time is spent on housekeeping.
In 1920, refrigerators accounted for only a negligible percentage - downward of a half, whereas washing machines and vacuum cleaners were precisely 40% and 30% respectively. Just after two decades, both washing machines and vacuum cleaners rose slightly. However, the most prominent data is refrigerators, which is an outstanding growth that made the percentages of the three details approximately the same, with almost half of the families owning them. The washing machine went through ups and downs before increasing steadily and ending the period at just under 70 %. At that point, almost households have for themselves at least a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner.
In addition to the increase in electric equipment, the number of hours spent on doing housework dropped sharply. It started at 50 hours per week, after which it fell peaked at just under 10 hours in 1980, before ending the period at about 10 hours a day.
